Journal quilts are opportunities to stretch quilt skills by trying new methods and experimenting with color, composition, materials and techniques. The small size (9” x 12”) encourages using small pieces of fabric and finishing the project within a reasonable amount of time—even an afternoon. The February session will focus on manipulating fabric, surface design—including making tubes as a design element, fused texture, quilting crumbs and rosettes.

‘Build’ a few houses, add a church, lots of trees, a few pickets fences, and some pretty flowers, and you have a colorful and scrappy new neighborhood. This 59″ square quilt combines pieces that can be rotary cut- a few require a template or two- and paper piecing. This is a free year-long Block of the Month class in which you can cut-and-sew. When you come to class, you will receive the pattern free, unless you want a color copy for $2. We will have kits available for the basic part of the quilt, allowing you to add your own fabric choices to make it ‘your own neighborhood’- different from every other quilt.

We will spend the afternoon making pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer to brighten the live of sick children in hospitals (ages 2-18). If you don’t want to sew, feel free to donate colorful fabric appropriate for a boy or a girl, or money to purchase more fabric. Each pillowcase requires 3/4 yard for the body and 1/4 yard for the border. We especially need cases for boys. Holiday fabrics are good choices. We already have a lot of Christmas fabrics. We will have fun putting the pillowcases together.

Based on the book Friendship Strips & Scraps, by Edyta Sitar
Let’s get together and enjoy each other’s company as we exchange fabric through strips. The more people we have the more variety in fabrics. This is how it works. Go to your favorite fabric shop (Cindy’s of course) and purchase 1 yard of your favorite fabric – one that you can’t live without because it is so beautiful. Go home and cut it into perfect 2 ½” strips. No wobbles please. Bring your strips to Cindy’s on the day of the class and get ready to exchange. Offer to trade a fabric strip with the individuals whose strips intrigue you. You don’t have to exchange with everyone – especially if you don’t like their fabric. If you really like someone’s fabric choice you may, however, have to offer them two of yours for one of theirs. March’s Class will have the color theme of Hot Colors.
